Las Vegas,Grand Canyon,Monument Valley。。。

Las Vegas (Spanish: "The Meadows") is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Nevada,
the seat of Clark County, and an internationally renowned resort city for gambling, shopping, and entertainment.
Las Vegas, billed as The Entertainment Capital of the World, is famous for the number of casino resorts and associated entertainment.
A growing retirement and family city, it is the 28th most populous city in the United States with an estimated population
by the U.S. Census Bureau of 558,880 as of 2007.
The estimated population of the Las Vegas metropolitan area, which is the entirety of Clark County, was 1,836,333.

Established in 1905, Las Vegas officially became a city in 1911. With the growth that followed, at the close of the century
Las Vegas was the most populous American city founded in the 20th century (a distinction held by Chicago in the 19th century).
The city's tolerance for various forms of adult entertainment earned it the title of Sin City, and this image has made Las Vegas a popular setting
for films and television programs.
Outdoor lighting displays are everywhere on the Las Vegas Strip and are seen elsewhere in the city as well;
as seen from space, Las Vegas is the brightest city on earth.

grand-canyon-01.jpg
The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge carved by the Colorado River in the United States state of Arizona.
It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park — one of the first national parks in the United States.

Longstanding scientific consensus has been that the canyon was created by the Colorado River over a six million year period.
The canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, ranges in width from 4 to 18 miles (6.4 to 29 km) and attains a depth of over a mile (1.83 km)(6000 feet).
Nearly two billion years of the Earth's history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock
while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. The "canyon started from the west, then another formed from the east, and the two broke through
and met as a single majestic rent in the earth some six million years ago. [...]
The merger apparently occurred where the river today, coming from the north, bends to the west, in the area known as the Kaibab Arch.

monument_valley-01.jpg
Monument Valley
Monument Valley is located on the southern border of Utah with northern Arizona (around 36°59′N 110°6′W / 36.983, -110.1),
near the Four Corners area. The valley lies within the range of the Navajo Nation Reservation,
and is accessible from U.S. Highway 163. The Navajo name for the valley is Tsé Bii' Ndzisgaii (Valley of the Rocks).

Additionally, hot air balloon flights are available May 1st thru October 31st, and small airplane flights are sometimes available.
Monument Valley is part of the Grand Circle, which includes the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, Bryce Canyon National Park,
Zion Canyon National Park, Capitol Reef, Natural Bridges, Hovenweep, Arches National Park, and many other attractions.

Helicopter or airplane trips last from one to three and a half hours. Airplane tours may just fly over,
but some helicopter tours offer an optional canyon-bottom landing. All of the helicopter trips go to the WEST RIM,
not the more popular and well-known South Rim. Don't let it keep you from going,
but don't be surprised when it doesn't look quite like you expected. The West Rim is where the Grand Canyon Skywalk is located.

Grand Canyon from Las Vegas: Drive Yourself
Driving to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas allows more flexibility and privacy than a commercial tour,
and it enables visiting either rim. Consider these factors when deciding which rim to visit:
The North Rim is my personal favorite. It's far less crowded than the south, where you almost have to elbow your way to the overlooks in summer.
Because of the canyon's shape, views are better, and the drive through Zion National Park on the way is an added attraction. The North Rim is closed in winter.

The South Rim is open all year. It's the one with the most publicity, and the one most people think they should visit.
If you'll feel embarrassed back home to say you didn't visit El Tovar (or any other famous sight), this is the rim for you.

Making the drive to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas in one day requires an early start and enough stamina to drive for twelve hours or more.
Leaving Las Vegas at 7:00 AM and returning at 9:00 PM allows about two hours for sightseeing,
enough time to drive around, peer over a few overlooks and take some photos.

An overnight trip to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas allows more time to enjoy the sights at a leisurely pace,
and to see the canyon at its most beautiful, at sunset and sunrise. An overnight trip to the North Rim allows time to visit Zion National Park, too.

If you plan to stay overnight at the canyon or near Zion, reserve well in advance.
The National Park lodges fill up fast, and they're the only practical option on the North Rim.

http://gocalifornia.about.com/cs ... /a/nvgcanfromlv.htm

conclusion:
drive yourself, plan at least two days trip, reserve lodges in advance.

Top Things to Do at the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is one of the major attractions of the Southwest. It is one of those places you must put on your "life list." But many who go to the Grand Canyon don't know where to start. Here are the best things to do and see at the Grand Canyon.

1.Ride a Mule Down Into the Canyon - Grand Canyon National Park
While most visitors gather to gawk at the canyon from the rim look-outs and head for the gift shops, the more adventurous may find that a mule trip into the canyon will make their visit to the Grand Canyon truly memorable.

2.Stay or Dine at the Historic El Tovar Hotel - Grand Canyon National Park
The Grand Canyon's El Tovar is situated 100 yards from the rim. Rooms and dining room have a breathtaking view. El Tovar is built with massive beams hewn from Oregon pine. The first floor has log slabbed siding with corners carefully notched to give the impression of solid logs. Together with the mounted deer, elk and moose, El Tovar has an unusual design and could easily be a hunting lodge belonging to the rich and famous.

3.Fly Over the Grand Canyon with Maverick Helicopters
It's like flying in a bubble over the edge of the beautiful Grand Canyon.
From the airport right at the Grand Canyon select your flight and enjoy the journey.
When the ride is finished, you will be offered a photo and DVD of your flight.

4.Travel to the Grand Canyon National Park from Williams via Grand Canyon Railway
A ride on the Grand Canyon Railway is a fun and environmentally friendly way to visit the Grand Canyon – No wait at the gate, no driving and parking problems and, when you are tired after a long day, you'll ride in style, enjoy live music and savor snacks and drinks as you watch the sun slip down over the western prairie.

5.Visit the Out of the Way Grand Canyon West Skywalk
Just remember that the Skywalk is not in Grand Canyon National Park (the South Rim). It's fairly accessible from Las Vegas. There are tough roads to traverse, fees for parking and entry, but it's a memorable place to go. I just loved the canyon itself. The walls are much closer than at the National Park and you can look down and see the Colorado River much easier. It's an adventure... but remember, it's not the traditional Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon West and the Skywalk - What Visitors Need to Know

Dec 5 2008
Ready to step onto the Skywalk and look through the glass floor at the base of the canyon some 4,000 feet below? Well, here's how to plan your Skywalk trip.

Getting to Grand Canyon West and the Skywalk

Since the opening of the Grand Canyon West Skywalk, the world now knows about Grand Canyon West and it's unique beauty. However, confusion about how to get there is common. First, it's important to know that the location is not near the Grand Canyon National Park South Rim or North Rim. If you are flying to the Southwest, select either the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport (PHX), or the Las Vegas Airport(LVS). Have a look at our article and website links that will help you with planning a trip to any of these three separate Grand Canyon locations.

Grand Canyon West is owned by the Hualapai Tribe. Consisting of approximately 2,000 Hualapai members, the tribe owns nearly one million acres of land throughout the Grand Canyon’s western rim. The capitol of the Hualapai Reservation is Peach Springs, Ariz. Peach Springs is not far from Kingman, Arizona and is on Route 66. Map

Grand Canyon West is accessible from Peach Springs via freeway and the infamous Diamond Bar Road. 14 miles of Diamond Bar Road are graded and maintained but not paved. RV’s will not be able to use that road. We recommend using the Park and Ride Coach Service for visitors driving RV’s and other low lying vehicles. If you do that, you will park at the Grand Canyon West Welcome Center on Pierce Ferry Road which is one mile past Diamond Bar Road. Please call to reserve your round trip seat on the Park and Ride service. There is a nominal fee for either driving and parking your own vehicle or parking and taking the bus. Reservations: (702) 260-6506

Once you reach the airstrip terminal, you can purchase a package to tour Grand Canyon West. Map and Directions from Las Vegas, Kingman, Phoenix and More.

Enjoying the Skywalk

Your basic tour once at Grand Canyon West is the "Hualapai Legacy Tour" - this is the basic per person admittance to Grand Canyon West and costs $29.95 per person. With this ticket you will have access to all Points of interest. To go out on the Skywalk, it will cost an additional $29.95 (2008 pricing).

You won't be able to take personal effects out on the Skywalk as if visitors dropped things, the sensitive plexiglass would soon be scratched. Visitors are asked to store all personal effects in lockers. There is a professional photographer on the walkway and those photos are available for purchase in the visitors center.

Hours of Operation

Winter hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. As daylight extends, you will find the closing time extended. The summer hours effective May 1st are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Of course if you have purchased an overnight package, you will not have to leave and can enjoy Hualapai Ranch on the canyon rim.

Red Rock etc.
